WHY I DO THIS (THE SHORT VERSION)

Running a business can be both bloody hard work and incredibly rewarding. I know, because I’m a business owner too.

I get that it can be hard to step outside your business and find time to develop the strategies, content, and messaging you need to grow your company, not just run it.

Because what you did to get your business up and moving isn't what you need to do to uplevel it.

And it's when you decide to uplevel your business – stepping up to a level where you charge higher prices, have a waiting list of clients, and are treated with respect as an expert in your field – that you really need to delegate.

Let me say this LOUD and CLEAR: rising up to the next level with your work and sharing your gifts with more people should not have to mean decimating your work-life balance.

Instead, you should be able to let go

And as a writer and communications expert who loves creating compelling stories and conversion-driving messages with punch, personality and some major va-va-voom, I'm here to help you with that.

WHY I DO THIS (THE LONGER VERSION)

Today, I’m a copywriter and content strategist living in Brooklyn, New York. But back in the day, I lived in rural North Wales in the U.K., in a town in between the mountains and the sea.

For years as I was growing up, I helped out at weekends and during vacations in my family's business, my dad's veterinary practice.

But ever since my love of writing funny stories about my classmates when I was eight had *briefly* turned me into one of the class cool kids, I’d always wanted to be a writer.

So I was both thrilled and slightly terrified when I was offered a place to go study at the University of Oxford – the hallowed stomping ground of so many wonderful writers! I started my degree there more than a little bit intimidated, but eventually graduated third in my degree program and loving it.

Along the way, because I’d studied Modern Languages, I was lucky enough to be able to go live in Paris for a year.

Now, Paris was everything you can imagine and likely more besides. While I was there, I walked all over the city, ate a lot of steak frites, met some amazing people, knew I was fitting in the day when I had a huge argument in French with a cursing secondhand bookseller, and traveled around France as much as I could.

Living life in another language was both kind of hard and really awesome, and by the end of my degree I realized that I wanted to keep exploring other countries and working with language in exciting ways.

So after Oxford, I moved – this time, to New York City, to do a Ph.D at New York University. While studying for my doctorate, I read heaps of amazingly-written - and sometimes very "experimental"! - books, published original research, taught writing and literature from around the world, lived in a series of tiny East Village apartments, won various prizes and eventually graduated with honors.

But by then, I was ready for a change.

I loved my research and teaching, but I also wanted to work with a more diverse range of people and write for a wider variety of audiences. And I wanted my writing to have more real-world impact.

In particular, I kept thinking back to my background of growing up helping out in my dad’s small business.

So I made a life-changing, "I'm-gonna-go-for-this" decision - I bid farewell to academia and set off to go back to my roots of working with small (and growing!) businesses. Specificallyworking with entrepreneurs and solopreneurs with a passion for what they do and a need for bold, creative copy.

To make that move, I took a serious deep-dive into digital marketing and brought myself up-to-speed on the best copywriting and content creation practices. I cut through the hype to figure out which techniques were actually resonating with people, and developed my own, unique communications framework and philosophy.

And I began helping entrepreneurs from all over the globe use top-notch copy and content to seriously grow their businesses.

Today, my writing’s featured on websites that get visited by over 1.5 million viewers a month. I’ve written copy for brand-new website launches, for long-established companies in need of content revamps, and for a huge variety of small businesses and solopreneurs.

And you know what? I actually see a lot of parallels between the work I do now and the work that I once did as a scholar and educator.

While I was at NYU, I worked to spread the word about talented writers, helping them get their voices heard and their creativity appreciated. I helped students have confidence in their own, original ideas, and express them in ways that were clear and compelling to others.

Right now, I transform the marketing and website copy of talented, creative businesspeople. I spread the word about their companies in ways that make their target audience sit up, take them seriously, and eagerly seize the chance to buy from them. I write words that grab and hold people’s attention, sharpen their curiosity, or make them feel inspired. My work showcases how companies provide incredible value to customers and truly make a difference.

I believe that if a business makes great things happen, it deserves great copy to highlight that.
